The 2017 S. Area BMFA Open Esoaring Championship Report

A series of 4 competitions run in conjunction with the BMFA Esoaring League, these legs hosted by the Alton Silent Fliers at their East Worldham site near Alton.

Like last year all 4 events were blessed with very good weather so all 4 events were run as intended with 6 rounds with a discard (lots of flying for all). The Championship being awarded to the competitor with the best combined score from 3 of the 4 events, (this allowed for an event to be missed and not ruin the chances of the series win).

The average attendance on each day was 14 competitors, overall 17 pilots took part in a very closely fought competition, such that after 3 rounds the top spot could go to any one of 5 pilots.

The Open Class series winner was Martin Garnet (291.32) with Mike Raybone 2nd (291.27) and Dave East 3rd (286.99). For information Chris Foss was 4th (286.33) and Terry Stuckey 5th (283.55). As you can see what I meant when I said it was tight just 7.77points separating the top 5!

The 2 metre class was not contested this year.

One other trophy was awarded for the best flight of the series, this went to Glyn Chambers. In the third round of the series Glyn found himself dead in the water at about 50ft when about to make his landing approach he contacted some very light lift, making around 10 or so thermal turns with little height gain found the lift to be slowly strengthening and eventually climbed away to around 1000ft and when landing had won the slot.

Key to the photographs:
1. Glyn being presented with the best flight trophy
2. Martin Garnet the Open Class Winner
3. Mike Raybone the Open Class 2nd Place
4. Dave East the Open Class 3rd Place
