Southern Area BMFA supports Museum of Army Flying Event

Monday 28 May 2018 saw the Southern Area BMFA once again support the Museum of Army Flying with their Wartime Wallop themed Family Fun Day. A large and impressive static display of many types of model aircraft from FPV Drone Racer through Helicopters, Free Flight, Sport/Scale/Sailplane models, Turbine models to impressive 33% International Miniature Aerobatic Club (IMAC) & 33% Scale Tiger Moth aircraft.

The static display was supported by 3.5 hours of flying demonstrations in near ideal weather conditions apart from the very early part of the display when the 700-800ft cloudbase, formed after the fog had burnt off, limited the vertical manoeuvres possible.

The cloud quickly dissipated into a very warm and sunny day with many attendees saying they ended up a bit red by the end of the day (note for next year, make sure more sunscreen cream is available).

Most types of model flying were demonstrated throughout the day with a live commentary being provided by David Tappin of the Wimborne Club so that the viewing public could appreciate the technicalities and

challenges of the Sport, as well as learning a little more about the pilots involved.

A good range of clubs from the Southern Area were present with a large contingent from the Wimborne MAC, Beaulieu Flyers, Salisbury Club, Chichester & District Club , Alton MFC, Waltham Chase Aeromodellers and Helipad represented. All those who attended the event seemed to enjoy themselves in the relaxed family atmosphere of the event, with many declaring they would like to be involved in the same event next year and many saying that they would also like to attend the Southern Area BMFA ‘Fly In’ planned at the same fantastic venue on 7 July later this year (2018) for BMFA members and involved in the same event next year and many saying that they would also like to attend the Southern Area BMFA ‘Fly In’ planned at the

same fantastic venue on 7 July later this year (2018) for BMFA members and their families. With the full size departures and subsequent arrival of the Beaver and Auster of the Army Historic Aircraft Flight during the lunch time break from model flying, along with static display of several historic and current serving helicopters of the Army Air Corp, including the aggressive looking Apache, there was plenty for aviation enthusiasts of both full size and miniature aircraft to view.

There were lots of questions from & interesting discussions with the visiting public and several latent or potential aeromodellers declared a renewed interest in getting back into, or taking up the sport, having been impressed by the scope and quality of the models on show and of the potential the hobby offered these days.
